Westwood Residence

Westwood Residence | A West Plaza Gem
Kansas City, MO

The neighborhoods west of Kansas City’s iconic Country Club Plaza—West Plaza, Westwood, Westwood Hills, and others—are known for their eclectic mix of homes. With their close proximity to the University of Kansas Medical School and the Country Club Plaza, these neighborhoods are experiencing a surge in redevelopment, bringing new life to their unique character.

This home stands out even among its unconventional neighbors. Originally built in the 1950s and reconstructed in the early 2000s following a fire, the house occupies a highly visible triangular corner lot. While today’s zoning ordinances would deem the lot “unbuildable,” the original design embraced the wedge-shaped site with a footprint dictated by the setbacks of its time. However, the existing layout was fragmented and lacked inspiration, leaving room for significant improvement.

The new owner envisioned a complete update to the home, including the addition of a garage and a roof terrace, alongside a reimagined interior that prioritized functionality and modern efficiency. The redesigned home embraces a vertical organization, with each level tailored to serve a specific purpose.

The lowest level features the entryway, a two-car garage, mechanical space, a mudroom, laundry, and a small office. Moving up, the first level serves as the heart of the home, with an open-concept kitchen, pantry, dining area, hearth room, and den. The second level becomes the primary sleeping quarters, housing two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and ample closets. The top floor offers a luxurious retreat, featuring a third bedroom and bath, a lounge with a bar, and a rooftop terrace with sweeping views of Brush Creek and Ward Parkway.

Clad in a striking combination of metal, wood, and stucco, the renovated residence adopts a distinctly modern aesthetic, setting it apart from the surrounding homes while respecting the area’s eclectic charm. The transformation redefines the home’s relationship with its challenging lot, turning what once was an uninspired space into a bold, contemporary home that captures the spirit of its dynamic neighborhood.
