64th Street Residence

64th Street Residence | A Contemporary Hacienda
Prairie Village, KS

Drawing inspiration from the owners’ travels throughout Mexico, this home reinterprets the traditional Spanish hacienda with a contemporary twist. Designed as three interconnected bars—two running front to back, with a third connecting them—the orientation naturally forms courtyards at the front and rear, reminiscent of a classic Spanish hacienda. These elements are unified behind a striking stone entry wall, blending tradition with modern design.

The layout is both functional and intentional: one bar is dedicated to sleeping quarters, while the other houses the service areas, including the kitchen, pantry, and dining room. The central “bridge” connects these spaces, featuring the primary living area, entryway, and stair, creating a seamless flow throughout the home.

Entering through the front courtyard, guests are greeted by the soothing sound of a continuously running fountain and shielded from the street by a steel slat wall. A hammered steel door opens to reveal a view through the expansive living space, leading the eye to the open-air rear courtyard, where a built-in fireplace serves as a focal point. The interior layout thoughtfully maintains visibility of the home’s distinct bars while integrating the living, kitchen, and dining spaces into a cohesive whole.

The kitchen and dining areas feature vaulted ceilings that extend outward to the exterior, seamlessly transitioning to a covered dining patio and outdoor kitchen. Just two steps down from this patio lies the rear courtyard, complete with a built-in gas firepit. This terraced design preserves clear sightlines from the living room’s large windows to the lushly landscaped rear yard, creating a harmonious connection between the interior and exterior spaces.

This home masterfully balances the essence of a traditional hacienda with modern functionality, offering a tranquil retreat that celebrates its Mexican influences while catering to contemporary living.
