Melrose Abbey KC

Melrose Abbey | Historic Foundations, Modern Celebrations
Kansas City, MO

Originally built in 1903 as the First Swedish Baptist Church, this historic property has been reimagined into an elegant, state-of-the-art wedding and event venue. With 24,000 square feet of space, we collaborated closely with the owners to develop a flexible program that allows the property to serve multiple functions while honoring its architectural legacy.

The lower level was designed as a grand reception space, ideal for weddings and other events. This area features a full-service bar, a catering kitchen, and restrooms, all set beneath crystal chandeliers framed by a coffered ceiling with accent lighting, creating a luxurious and inviting ambiance.

On the main level, the sanctuary serves as the centerpiece of the venue. Lovingly restored and updated, the space features modified and rearranged pews to create a central aisle perfect for weddings. The original stained-glass windows were meticulously restored, while the balcony was reconditioned to provide additional seating. The renovation of the balcony also allowed for the discreet integration of modern HVAC systems, ensuring comfort without compromising the historic aesthetic.

The venue also includes thoughtfully designed amenities to enhance the guest experience. An office supports event planning, while an all-white bridal suite with built-in makeup stations offers a serene preparation space. The groom’s suite, complete with a wet bar, provides a relaxed environment for the wedding party. Additionally, a series of hotel rooms were incorporated to accommodate the couple’s family on-site. When not reserved for events, these rooms are available as hotel suites during the week, maximizing the property’s usability.

This transformation celebrates the historic charm of the original church while creating a timeless, functional space for unforgettable events.
