The Forest Park Residence | Creative Design on a Dramatic Terrain
Shawnee, KS
Nestled into a steeply sloped residual lot that has remained vacant for 30 years, our Forest Park residence overcomes the challenges of the site’s dramatic terrain. With a nearly 25-foot drop from back to front, the lot is surrounded by neighborhood trails, dense trees, and thriving wildlife, offering both complexity and beauty.
The proposed design embraces the slope with a contemporary interpretation of the historic longhouse, simplifying construction while blending harmoniously with the natural surroundings. From the driveway, guests ascend gradual terrace steps that lead to the home’s main entry, located in a breezeway. Beyond the breezeway, the property connects seamlessly to a nearby neighborhood trail at the rear, encouraging engagement with the surrounding environment.
Separate from the main residence is a versatile office space that can also function as a guest house or cabana. Large multi-slide patio doors open this space to the front yard, where the preserved trees provide a natural playground for the children.
In addition to its striking design, the residence actively gives back to the neighborhood by addressing longstanding erosion issues. Thoughtful grading repairs help stabilize the site and improve conditions for neighboring properties, resolving problems that originated during the development of the area in the 1990s.
This project is a testament to creative problem-solving and a commitment to integrating architecture with its natural and communal context, transforming a long-overlooked lot into a vibrant and purposeful home.
