Originally designed as the Mercantile Bank Building by renowned Chicago architect Harry Weese Associates in 1974, the now-named Wall Street Tower stands as an architectural landmark in downtown Kansas City. The building gained notoriety for its innovative use of cruciform-shaped “mega-columns,” one of only two structures in the country to feature them. These exposed columns, filled with a liquid to remain cool in the event of a fire, eliminated the need for traditional fireproofing, allowing their unique design to remain a visible feature. 

While the building itself was groundbreaking, its 2005 conversion into condominiums fell victim to the rapid, often uninspired condo craze of the time, leaving many units with substandard finishes and poorly thought-out layouts. This unit was no exception. 

Upon purchasing their new home, the owners discovered almost ten feet of unused vertical space hidden above the existing ceilings. This revelation sparked a collaborative effort to reimagine the unit, resulting in a dramatic renovation that added a second floor and expanded the living space by 30%. 

The reconfigured main level is designed as an entertainment hub, featuring an elevated kitchen centered around a large island—the perfect gathering spot for parties. The open-plan living and dining area retains its soaring ceilings, enhanced by a wall of full-height southern-facing windows that provide abundant natural light and stunning views of Oppenstein Brothers Memorial Park. A full bathroom and laundry area on this level offer convenience and functionality. 

The new second floor provides a private retreat, housing a primary suite with ample closet space, a modest yet elegant bathroom, and a cantilevered bedroom overlooking the living space below. The bathroom’s “peek-a-boo” windows add a playful touch, offering glimpses of the activity downstairs while preparing for a grand entrance via the winding staircase. 

This renovation blends modern luxury with thoughtful design, creating a residence that fully embraces the building’s historic architectural character while delivering contemporary functionality and charm.
