Fontana Residence

Fontana Residence | A Forest-Inspired Family Home
Prairie Village, KS

A young family adored their location, neighborhood, and street but found their home lacking in character and charm. They envisioned a residence inspired by the warmth and texture of a forest cabin, nestled within their historic, tree-lined neighborhood.

The small, flat lot presented challenges, particularly in bringing natural light to the lower level. To address this, the design incorporates a staircase partially outside the home’s footprint, wrapped in windows to function as a light monitor. This feature channels sunlight throughout the home, especially brightening the lower level.

A modest covered porch welcomes guests into the home, where they are greeted near a formal dining room. Passing the staircase light monitor, visitors transition into the open living space, seamlessly connected to the kitchen. Behind the kitchen, a thoughtfully tucked-away back kitchen provides storage for small appliances and leads into the children’s playroom. This arrangement keeps the kids close by while offering them a space for independent, creative play.

Upstairs, the home’s private spaces are organized for both comfort and practicality. The primary suite features a full en-suite bath and walk-in closet. A guest suite includes its own private bath, perfect for visiting grandparents, while two additional children’s bedrooms share a Jack-and-Jill bathroom.

The lower level serves as the family’s primary gathering space, ideal for movie and game nights with the kids. For quieter evenings, it also includes a fully equipped lounge where the parents can entertain friends.

At the rear of the home, a screened-in, covered deck connects directly to the backyard. This space features an outdoor fireplace and heaters, creating a cozy environment for year-round enjoyment.

This home captures the essence of a forest retreat while prioritizing thoughtful functionality, creating a space uniquely suited to the lifestyle and aspirations of a growing family.
