The Loose Park Residence | Preserving Tradition, Embracing Modernity
Kansas City, MO
Loose Park, a cherished gem in the heart of Kansas City, is surrounded by equally treasured homes—many nearing their centennial. This residence is no exception: a stately two-story Italianate Renaissance stucco home with broad eaves and intricate frieze board detailing, organized around a traditional central stair plan.
The new owners enlisted our team to modernize the home’s functionality for their young and growing family while preserving its historic charm. The living room was thoughtfully retained, while the adjacent sunroom was reimagined as a dedicated playroom for the children. To maintain natural light in the home’s deep floorplan, glass doors were added, allowing the playroom to be closed off without sacrificing daylight.
In the kitchen and dining area, spaces were strategically flipped to accommodate a new two-car garage, mudroom, and back kitchen—replacing the aging, dilapidated garage. Upstairs, the bedrooms were reconfigured to improve flow, and a new primary en suite was designed, offering the parents a serene retreat once the children are tucked in for the night.
The interiors were intentionally kept minimal, creating a focus on the family and their time together, rather than on ornate decorations or objects. This project is a thoughtful blend of historic preservation and modern practicality, designed to support the evolving needs of a family while honoring the timeless character of this Loose Park neighborhood home.
